Most swellings in the thyroid gland are benign. They do need to be investigated, usually with an ultrasound scan and sometimes a fine needle biopsy, so that an accurate diagnosis can be made.
Will I need a biopsy?
Not always. If the ultrasound appearance suggests a biopsy would be helpful, a fine needle aspiration can be arranged. It is a very safe test that causes minimal discomfort.
How long will I stay in hospital?
After thyroid surgery most patients stay for one or two nights. A minimal incision parathyroidectomy is a smaller operation with a quicker recovery.
Could surgery affect my voice?
The nerves to the vocal cords lie close to the thyroid and great care is taken to protect them. Some temporary hoarseness can occur, but permanent voice change is uncommon (around 1%). Mr Crinnion will discuss this with you before surgery.
